Hostel Name:

Glenaros Lodge

Job Description:

A vacancy currently exists for a person, a couple or two friends to assist with the general day to day running of this beautiful small hostel set in its own extensive and wooded grounds in an idyllic setting overlooking the sea on the magical Isle of Mull.

Just a short distance from the village of Salen and a 15 minute bus ride from Tobermory, Glenaros Lodge offers a mixture of alternative B&B, guest house, retreat, hostel & venue for residential gatherings, meetings & activities, including live music, songwriting workshops, writers' retreats and eco gatherings. We are also located well for sea kay aking, walking, biking, bird watching as well as seal, otter, whale & dolphin watching. We arrange tours of the Isles of Mull & Iona too.

The person sought will ideally be a lover of nature & solitude, yet also love hospitality, be personable & have good housekeeping skills. The ability to cook & cater for guests is a distinct advantage as is the ability to work alone when required as well as part of a team when we are busy.A creative person would find Glenaros Lodge a place of inspiration & tranquility, yet also a place of great fun, laughter and occasional utter mayhem, so a sense of humour is essential. A good feeling presentation would be an asset, as this is a very homely, cosy house with comfortable rooms & we try to make the best of what we have in this beautiful old traditional island home.

Accommodation will be provided & an allowance towards food in return for your active participation in this wonderful project. An opportunity to earn commissions on bike hire & kayak rentals exists too, so some basic knowledge of bikes & boats would help too, although this is not essential. The ability to drive would be useful & if you own a car, even better. A tall order, but we believe that the right person or people are out there. A minimum stay of a month (but preferably much more) would be required, although this could become a permanent position.

The Job
You have the vital role of making sure the hostel is attractive and clean. This involves a variety of general housekeeping including vacuuming, cleaning, laundry, general tidying and organisation, etc. You will also supervise volunteers and part-time housekeeping staff as well as getting stuck in yourself.

Is this you?
Attention to detail is one of your strengths, along with being friendly, fit, house proud, hardworking and organised - you care about your work and have a positive outlook. This is a job for someone ready to put a lot in and get a lot out! Some experience could be useful, but the important thing is your attitude, common sense and initiative. We want you to enjoy being at Comrie Croft! We ask you to work a 20-hour week, 5 days a week, usually Thursday to Monday. We'll try and be flexible and hope you will do the same. Hours will normally be 4 hours from 10.30am, with an occasional split shift (one or two hours in the middle).

The job involves a fair amount of time working alone as well as with other members of the team. Taking time to be friendly and help guests is really encouraged. The Croft is set at the foot of a hill in a beautiful rural location in the upper Strathearn valley. It's great country for walking, cycling, photography, writing, art, etc. The community of Comrie is two miles away, served by a regular bus. Two other members of the team also live onsite.

Previous staff have become good friends, we hope you will too.

What are the benefits?

  • Monthly pay of £350.00 plus a bonus of £200 after 6 months. Overtime at £6.00/hr (when available);
  • Good private accommodation, comprising a large mobile home with ensuite toilet and shower, double room, twin room, kitchen and living area;
  • No bills to pay, except telephone if you wish to use it;
  • Paid holidays equivalent to 28 days per year, pro rata;
  • Free use of the lodge clothes washing and drying facilities;
  • Use of most other hostel facilities, including TV lounge, mountain bikes, internet access, etc.
